Course Format

The eHIV Review series will consist of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with HIV. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of HIV specialists. The activities are delivered as four bi-monthly newsletters and four alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to two years to complete the four newsletters and four podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

• Compare the risks and benefits of tenofovir alafenamide and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in antiretroviral regimens.
• Evaluate patient cases to determine when switching to newer regimens is appropriate.
• Define newly identified at-risk groups, such as young PWID and transgender women.
• Design effective strategies to overcome barriers to PrEP treatment in at-risk populations.
• Describe the importance of screening and monitoring for kidney disease in patients currently taking ART.
• Design a plan to improve screening and monitoring rates of patients currently on ART.
• Identify increased prevalence and complications of lung disease in patients with HIV, including drug-drug interactions.
• Develop optimal treatment combinations with minimal drug interactions for patients with HIV and obstructive lung diseases.
• Identify new and emerging ARTs and specific characteristics to each agent/combination.
• Evaluate which new and emerging ARTs would be most effective for your patients based on differential factors including novel mechanisms of action and side effects.

Statement of Responsibility

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

Statement of Need

• Clinicians may not be aware of evidence describing the use of tenofovir alafenamide in place of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in antiretroviral regimens.
• Clinicians and patients are often reluctant to switch from older ART regimens, despite data supporting the benefits of newer antiretroviral agents.
• The changing demographics of patients with newly diagnosed HIV present a challenge for clinicians in identifying and screening high-risk individuals.
• Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is underused because of clinician- and patient-related biases and misconceptions, as well as lack of awareness.
• HIV care providers may underestimate the potential for renal toxicity when using ART in their patients, and therefore are not screening and monitoring for kidney disease.
• HIV care providers may not be aware of the increased prevalence of lung diseases in patients with HIV as well as potential interactions between some ART and inhaled corticosteroids, leading to suboptimal clinical outcomes.
• Clinicians need to be aware of the new ARTs (ie. NRTIs) currently in development including their novel mechanisms of action, side effects, and potential role in treatment.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity.

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CE credit.

Intended Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes clinicians treating patients with HIV including infectious disease (ID) specialists, primary care physicians (PCPs), nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and others.

There are no fees or prerequisites for this activity.
